About Our Rollstock Films

Rollstock (thermoforming) films are used on tray and rollstock forming machines to form, fill, and seal packs for meat, sausage, cheese, fish, bakery, and medical products. We stock multilayer forming films in both medium barrier PA/PE construction and high barrier PA/EVOH/PE construction, each with a PE (or PP, for sterilization film) sealing layer for a strong, reliable seal.

Thicknesses, roll sizes, colors, and printing are available across our film range, see the symbol guide and specification table below to find the right film for your packaging line. Custom sizes, thicknesses, and printed rolls are made to order. Call us to discuss your specifications.

Key Properties

Typical Applications

πŸ“ž Not sure which film symbol is right for your product or thermoforming line? Call us at 201-939-3335 or email sales@globecasing.com. Custom thicknesses, sizes, and printed rolls are available but typically require larger minimum quantities and longer lead times.

Availability of Colors

Depending on the film type and thickness, rollstock films can be produced in transparent, white, yellow, orange, red, black, blue, or custom matched colors. In practice, we keep transparent film and select sizes of black film in stock, ready to ship. All other colors are produced to order, which typically involves a longer lead time and a minimum order quantity. Call us to discuss your color and volume needs.

Understanding Our Film Symbols

Each rollstock film we offer is identified by a short symbol describing its construction. Here is what each one means:

SymbolFilm TypeDescription
GFF Standard PA/PE film Medium barrier, PE sealing layer. Custom graphic printing up to 10 colors. Available in 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 140, 150, 160, 170, 180, 200, 240, and 300 micron thicknesses. Colors: transparent (all thicknesses); white (100, 120, 160, 200, 240 Β΅m); blue (170, 200, 240 Β΅m); red (80, 140, 200 Β΅m); black (80, 120, 160, 200 Β΅m).
GFD PA/PE film, higher PA content Medium barrier, built for packing bone in meat and products requiring high mechanical resistance. PE sealing layer, custom graphic printing up to 10 colors. Available in 100, 130, 140, 160, 200, and 250 micron thicknesses. Colors: transparent (all thicknesses); red (250 Β΅m).
GFG General purpose PA/PE film Medium barrier, PE sealing layer. A mid range general purpose forming film for standard thermoforming trays and packs, available from 100 to 240 microns.
GFH PA/EVOH/PE film High barrier, PE sealing layer. Available in 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 150, 170, 180, 200, 220, 250, and 300 micron thicknesses. Colors: transparent, white, blue.
GFL PA/PE film with easy peel Medium barrier bottom film, PE sealing layer, designed for easy peel opening. Available in 120, 160, 170, 180, 200, and 220 micron thicknesses. Colors: transparent.
GFS Film for sterilization (PA/PP) Medium barrier, temperature resistant up to 121Β°C for 60 minutes, PP sealing layer. Available in 90 and 100 micron top film, and 150 and 180 micron bottom film. Colors: transparent.

Understanding the Film Layers

In a multilayer film, different layers do different jobs. A PA (nylon) layer typically provides strength and puncture/gas resistance. An EVOH layer, where present, provides high oxygen barrier properties to protect flavor and extend shelf life. The innermost layer is the one that actually contacts the food and melts under heat to form the seal. This is the "PE seal" or "PP seal" noted in the tables above.

Polyethylene (PE) is the most common choice for that inner sealing layer because it:

GFS uses a polypropylene (PP) seal instead of PE, because PP holds up to the higher temperatures required for sterilization (121Β°C) that a standard PE seal would not withstand as well.
